Job Description

Metlakatla Development Corporation has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time Kelp Nursery Manager. This position will lead the planning, construction, and operations of a kelp and seaweed nursery in Prince Rupert. This is a key role in advancing the region’s regenerative ocean farming capacity and supporting a growing mariculture economy. In addition to managing the nursery, the Kelp Nursery Manager will oversee the planning and execution of the annual community scallop distribution and assist with tenure-related compliance and monitoring requirements. The Kelp Nursery Manager will report to the Aquaculture Operations Manager and work closely with community and industry partners. This position is termed (Start Date: June 1, 2025 | End Date: March 31, 2026 with a possibility of contract extension) .

 

Responsibilities:

Nursery Design and Setup

  • Lead the design, layout, and construction of a kelp nursery facility.
  • Coordinate with builders and suppliers to ensure a timely and functional setup.
  • Oversee equipment selection and installation.

 

Nursery Operations and Management

  • Manage the daily operations of the nursery.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for nursery management.
  • Monitor and maintain environmental conditions, water quality and facility hygiene.

 

Community Programs and Compliance

  • Oversee the planning, coordination, and successful execution of the annual community scallop distribution.
  • Assist with tenure-related compliance and monitoring requirements, ensuring all operational activities align with regulatory and licensing standards.

 

Reporting and Oversight

  • Maintain records and documentation for all nursery processes.
  • Report regularly to the Operations Manager on progress, challenges, and milestones.
  • Support reporting requirements for funders or regulators as needed.

 

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position, as required.

 

Experience and Qualifications:  

  • Background in marine biology, aquaculture, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in hatchery or nursery operations (ideally seaweed or kelp-focused).
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on, technical environment.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities or in remote coastal regions.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable car.
  • Ability to work individually with little supervision and as part of a dynamic team.
  • Project management experience, including financial and strategic planning and management.
  • Proficient use of various office-based software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
